Ava DuVernay started her career in filmmaking in 2010 with her directorial debut I Will Follow. She made history right then by becoming the first black woman to win the award.
In 2014, Ava DuVernay made yet another history when she became the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Picture and the Academy Award for Best Picture for her work on Selma, a biopic about Martin Luther King Jr though she missed out on the category of Best Director. She has also dabbled in television. Her television credits include the OWN drama series Queen Sugar and two Netflix drama limited series – When They See Us, which is based on the 1989 Central Park jogger case, and Colin in Black & White, which is based on the teenage years of NFL player Colin Kaepernick.
