Most of Charles Barkley’s transformation seems to have happened by making changes to his eating habits. Despite being an athlete, he has mostly focused on his diet and till now, he is yet to stress the importance of exercise and workouts to lose weight.
Charles Barkley has only ever revealed that he lost 50 pounds due to intermittent fasting and that he wants to shed more and return to better shape next year. He also opened up about how he had been gaining weight constantly after his hip surgery in 2016.
I’m down about 50 pounds. I’ve been doing the intermittent fasting thing where I’ve been eating one time a day. I’m down 52 (pounds) but I gained 94 when I got my new hips. I just got to get in better shape … No reason for being fat, man. Just put the fork down, Chuck.
Now, minus 50 pounds, things are a bit different. Sure, intermittent fasting meant that the former basketball player had to eat only mean once a day but the rewards are so worth it. Weight loss has made him more energetic than ever. Charles Barkley has his meal time fixed between 5 pm and 8 pm and the rest of the time, he fasted and never ate anything, he revealed in The Steam Room podcast with Ernie Johnson.
Although he has tried to be consistent with his new fasting regime, eating only once per day, and being on fast the remaining time, he has not always stuck to that routine. Not that Charles Barkley’s not serious about weight loss, but it’s hard when you are supposed to eat only one meal. And so, one time, he was caught snacking outside his usual time frame when his co-stars at TNT snuck up a camera in the green room. Soon, it became public knowledge when the moment was shared on the broadcast.
He may have lagged a few times but he is not going to give up on his weight loss journey when he is so motivated. His motivation to lose weight is his newfound love for golf. Charles Barkley believes that he could play much better golf if he just lost a few pounds and got in shape and more energetic. Just a few months ago, he finished in 74th place at the 2022 American Century Championship. Though it was his best finish ever in the tournament he has been participating in for more than 30 years, there’s always room for doing better.
Charles Barkley revealed in The Next Round podcast that he felt great at the tournament and was happy about his performance but unhappy with his conditioning. He had a nagging feeling that he could do better and he just couldn’t shake that off. He believed that he could have done better if he had more energy and if he was in better shape. He was advised to lose weight by Marcus Allen who pulled him aside, complimented his improvement, and then proceeded to tell him to get in shape to improve his game further. And thus, this was the origin of his recent weight loss story. In Barkley’s words,
I played the best I ever played. I played really, really well. I was a little disappointed in myself the first day because I kind of quit on the last three holes. I was just tired and I was really pissed that night. I got to get in better shape because I played great. Marcus Allen pulled me aside and said, ‘Man, I got to tell you something. I’m so pissed at you right now.’ I said, ‘What is it?’ He says, ‘You are so much better than 20 more of these players but your lack of conditioning just kicked your a**.’
Charles Barkley had a weight loss of 45 pounds in 2021 as well and in early 2012 as well, he lost 27 pounds after he weeded out junk foods like cookies and pizza and started eating asparagus, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. He was a part of the Weight Watchers program back then.
