Leslie Charleson is best known for playing the role of Monica Quartermaine on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital. She also did the CBS soap opera Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and guest-starred on many series such as Ironside, Mannix, Happy Days, Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, and The Rockford Files. But it’s her role on GH that’s the most prominent. She has won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominations for her performance in the show.
She’s been gone for some time from the show but guess who made her return to General Hospital this week! That’s right. Leslie Charleson is back playing Monica Quartermaine in the show. You did recognize her, right? I mean, I can understand if you didn’t because she looks so uncanny valley, doesn’t she? This week was a pleasant surprise for the viewers of General Hospital because the show had one of its most beloved characters, Monica, back. She had been a no-show since early 2022 on business trips which was really just Leslie taking time to recover from her many injuries. It’s almost been two years since she was last on the show during which she has changed a lot, which is to say during which she has had a lot of plastic surgery.
Oh, Leslie Charleson’s had cosmetic procedures. Can’t you just tell? I bet that you did not recognize her at first and it took you a while to figure out that it’s Monica and she’s back from her trademark bangs and hairstyle because she barely looked like a human. She has just completely messed up her face. It looks like everything that could go wrong while you get plastic surgery did go wrong with her because she looks uncanny valley now.
Monica Quartermaine from General Hospital did not age well, did she? It’s more like, she didn’t give aging a chance. She tried to not let aging happen by using artificial means and it didn’t end well for her. In trying to avoid wrinkles and lines and sagging, she gave up the human-ness and the character of her face. If only she had known when to stop with plastic surgery, she would have looked her age but still a human.
Leslie Charleson would not have looked like a mannequin acting human. She would not have looked that rubbery and like she’s a candle that’s going to melt anytime soon. Her complexion wouldn’t have made her look like she was a wax figurine. She wouldn’t have looked that creepily smooth if only she had known when to stop with Botox and fillers, if only she had understood that, with plastic surgery, less is always more.

It’s not just Botox and fillers that have made Leslie look so stiff and frozen and swollen, it’s also the fact that she most likely had a facelift that she looks unable to move her face. She looks so puffy in the face and very tight simultaneously. It looks like her face is being pulled back and it’s making her incapable of speaking properly. It was a bad call on her part to get plastic surgery. Monica from General Hospital could have done more research about the procedures and cosmetic experts before going through with it.
Or Leslie Charleson could have chosen to age naturally. But I think she succumbed to the pressure of staying youthful in Hollywood. It’s sad to see her give in to such pressure and get plastic surgery to run away from nature taking its course because she once apparently said that she was not going to let the pressure of showbiz affect her self-esteem.
I don’t care what anybody says. I’m happy with who I am. I’m not trying to be 25. I’m trying to be the best me that I can be at this age.
I guess Monica from General Hospital couldn’t keep her word. It’s sad that such an environment that bred insecurity in her was ever created but, to be cynical, that’s the shallowness of showbiz where plastic surgery is not a big deal at all. She has not confirmed having the procedure but we can tell that she has had it.
