According to the 35-year-old Australian, he just found out two weeks ago that he would be fighting Makhachev again after the Russian’s initial opponent, Charles Oliveira, pulled out due to injury. It implied Alexander Volkanovski had to drastically drop his weight in order to make the cut for a fight with only 12 days’ notice. Later, speaking about his weight loss, he told TNT Sports,

Obviously I was holding a lot of water. I was on a little holiday with the family, and I was enjoying it. I was enjoying the sun, had a couple of drinks and eating very well. But it’s funny, I had a day head-start before I got the call up because I saw that weight and I was like: ‘Oh wow, I’m not happy with that.’ So when I did get the phone call, I was like a kilo or two lighter.

Alexander Volkanovski continued, “You have to move some kilos but my body just knows, I flick a switch and the weight went off and my body just kicked into gear.” Furthermore, while Makhachev weighed 155 pounds, Volkanovski recorded 154.5 pounds at the weigh-in on Oct 20.

At the time, some even suggested that Volkanovski was under less pressure now that he had less time to prepare. However, the Australian fighter disagreed. During his press conference, he stated,

A lot of people think: ‘Ah, it’s a no-lose situation,’ and I’m sick of hearing that phrase, no-lose situation. Obviously my legacy is on the line. I want this rematch, and I want this lightweight title. I need this win, and now I’ve got to do it on 12 days’ notice. I’m never going to get this rematch again. This is gonna be the last chance I get at this lightweight title, and that’s why it’s not a no-lose situation.

Alexander Volkanovski was knocked out in round one by a head kick. However, despite losing the match again, he was able to shock many fans with his weight loss body transformation and well as received a lot of praise for his dedication.
