Jann Arden’s Debut Novel Is a Darkly Humorous Rural Story of Friendship, Loss, and Kidnapping!
Jann Arden has spent the two decades since she began writing her debut novel, The Bittlemores, imagining various destinies for the titular characters who form the story’s gloomy core. Harp Bittlemore and Mrs. Bittlemore, or Mrs. B. Arden didn’t think the Calgary singer-songwriter, deserved a first name.
They are easily two of the most heinous characters written in recent memory. They are filled with hatred, delusions, violence, and selfishness. Harp is most vicious when jacked up on homemade booze, which is nearly always the case.
Jann Arden released her debut novel, The Bittlemores, on Nov 7, 2023.

Early in the story, their activities destroy a family and ruin at least two childhoods. They are especially brutal to the animals on their farm, which is probably located in rural Alberta, but this is never stated.
So we may enjoy fantasizing about the horrific deaths their creator had planned for them in earlier draughts: being burned alive in a barn fire, for example, or being beheaded by a shotgun blast. Without giving too much away, the destiny of the Bittlemores isn’t quite as dramatic.
Make no mistake: The Bittlemores is still a dark place. Arden’s perspective on poverty, drunkenness, and the long-term effects of neglect, isolation, and abuse is reminiscent of Southern Gothic author Flannery O’Connor or New Brunswick’s David Adams Richards.
On the other hand, it’s also amusing. It centers on an adorable coming-of-age story presented in snappy first-person narration by a 14-year-old girl named Willa who is wise beyond her years.
