The actress & singer has spoken frankly about the health issue she suffered in 2018, just eight days before performing her breakthrough tune, This Is Me, at the Oscars. She added that she was even suited for her performance gown while in the hospital. Opening up further about the result of her stroke on Wednesday’s Loose Women, she added:

When it happened, I had about two to four months… ‘I had to regain all of my talking, and reading, and writing. I think the last bit of that was singing, I didn’t know if I could sing again.

According to People, the event occurred on February 24 at a rehearsal location in Burbank, California. Keala Settle was totally drained before the medical emergency because she had food sickness in Tokyo and was fighting a cold. At the time, her stress levels were so high that she had a nervous breakdown on set, bursting into tears. Later, she began to experience a shooting pain in her skull and noticed the right half of her body become numb. She explained:

It was like someone cracked an egg on the top of my head and then drew a line on my body, turning one half off. My body started drooping immediately. I tried to put my hands up to my face, but I could only move my left arm. I couldn’t talk because part of my tongue was immobile. I tried to stand, but there was nothing.

She suffered from a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), which is essentially a mini-stroke that causes comparable symptoms to a larger stroke and is frequently a warning sign of impending trouble. Her body began to recover after 20 minutes, as she rushed for a consultation with a series of brain scans.

The medical personnel discovered that half of her brain had been cut off from blood flow and oxygen for years due to clogged carotid arteries, which are key blood channels that carry blood to the brain, neck, and face. Her brain generated microscopic blood channels to supply it with blood as a form of compensation, but they snapped. The rare cerebrovascular illness is known as Moyamoya disease.

According to Keala Settle, the illness affects many women and explained, ‘It could have happened at any time. It just so happened to happen a week before the biggest performance of my life.’  Later, she underwent a 10-hour double-bypass brain surgery to deal with the condition and claimed that the experience helped to shape her personality for the better. Referring to her weight loss physique, she explained,

It’s shifted me in ways I’m still understanding. The way that I look at the world is so completely different. I’m more at peace than I’ve ever been; I can find the joy in things I never could. This truly gave me another lease on life.
